Google Earth Location Overlays
Following are location overlays for Google Earth. Google Earth a free PC application brought to you by Google. It's similar to satellite view on google maps, except that it allows you to change views and see terrain. I've added the location of many old Southeastern Pennsylvania churches and cemeteries which have records "readily available". By that, I mean they're in print in books (and I have most of the book references) and on the internet. Most of the book information is available at the various county historical societies.
Example of locations in Google Earth
When a church has a start date, it is generally when the records begin, but in some cases, it could be when the congregation began. If you would like to help with this project, see more information here for volunteers.
I'm also adding links to internet content (both free and paid subscriptions) to make searching easier. Note, I will not add links to "partial" information. Unless someone has taken the time to catalog all burials, baptisms, etc for some region of time, I will not add the link. For example, there are several links where someone only posted their ancestors' tombstone inscriptions. This becomes misleading when people think these are the only records available. For cemeteries, I will try to get find-a-grave links added to each one.
Any corrections of additions would be greatly appreciated. There are some small cemeteries in the Dr. Meiser and Schuylkill Roots books that I wasn't able to find. I'm hoping the locals can help fill these in. Also note that I used several sources to match churches and cemeteries to records. Matching descriptions of locations involved using the Pendot Maps (to get road numbers), scanning the edges of roads in Google Earth, and looking at the backgrounds of photos on the internet. Names have changed several times as well. It's possible that some of these locations are wrong, so do some research before heading out in the car!
If you plan to visit a cemetery, it's best if you have an idea where to look - some of these cemeteries are huge! The Schuylkill Roots books generally give inscriptions in order, row-by-row and that can help. Note that the Dr. Meiser cemetery records are alphabetical, but he has added family relationships (eg parents and spouses) using other sources. I had corresponded with Dr. Meiser on numerous occasions and he was the first to say that some of these relationships may be incorrect, so always double check with other sources.
After Google Earth is loaded, you should be able to click on the kmz file and do "open with" and select Google Earth. For convenience, you can turn on and off sections of locations by clicking on the boxes in the windows on the left side of Google Earth so that you only show church record, or only one county, for example.

Google Earth Map Overlays
You may find it interesting to overlay old maps onto Google Earth to see where your ancestor lived, or an old mill was, or nearest roads. Google Earth a free PC application brought to you by Google. It's similar to satellite view on google maps, except that it allows you to change views and see terrain. Adding overlay images isn't too hard and you can do this by just adding the overlay, resizing and rotating it within Google Earth. See their help page here.
Example of Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, PA overlaid in Google Earth
Following are some map overlays that I've created and saved as a KMZ file (which is the format that overlays are exchanged). You will first need to install Google Earth on your PC. Then click on a KMZ link below to view the overlay on on PC. After clicking on the link, click on "Open with" and select "Google Earth" and then "OK". If you're not in the right area of the country, just double click on the name of the place in your Temporary Places.
You'll want to be able to adjust the transparency to see more of the overlay, or more of the current satelitte view. To do this, right-click on the Place label (left side of window) and select Properties. Then adjust the Transparency slider left or right. Also, since the original old maps were not made with satellite technology, you may need to slide the image around slightly to improve alignment to local features. Move the bright green '+' in the middle of the overlay (when in Properties mode) to re-position the overlay.
If you want to save the KMZ locally on your PC, click on the object in "Temporary Places" and do "File/Save/Save to My Places"

Note that some of these have very approximate roads. The Lowhill and Weisenberg Townships overlays are based on maps that were pretty far off. The areas built up around straight (and likely well surveyed) areas are much better.
Here are some links to map resources to create your own overlay (ask me if you need help). Be sure to help these places out that have provided a lot of great material to internet...
Steps to create your own map overlays:
- Move the earth to the area that you will create your overlay.
- Click Add/Image Overlay.
- In the Link: box, enter either the URL to an image on the internet, or Browse for a local file.
- Move the Transparency control to about 50%.
- Adjust the rotation by clicking and moving the green diamond - get it close.
- Start by using "constrained" size changes. If you use shift+click when moving a side or corner, it preserves the original aspect ratio.
- Whenever you resize, go back and re-center.
- Try to get the map roads on average where they should be - some above the real underlying road, plus some below.
- Recheck rotation - for example, if the most real roads at the top are to the left of the map roads, and the ones at the bottom are to the right, then rotate with the diamond. Then re-center.
- Lastly, drag the edges and corners without the shift key to stetch things to fit. After each adjustment, re-center.
- In the end, you should see roads near all edges are close (but not likely perfect).
- When you're done, be sure to save it!
Index of KMZ content (11/15/15)
Following is a list of links in the KMZ file. Using the KMZ file in Google Earth will show the exact locations of each item. The index here will only be updated occasionally, so check the kmz file often to see what's new. The links that are in the kmz pop-ups are added below for convenience. Many of these baptisms and marriages refer to locations as congregations were forming. In many cases, there is disagreement about the location being referenced (township?, river, church?). If anyone can verify corrections to the locations (eg, using tax lists that confirm the people's likely location), please email corrections. Several typed versions exist on the internet, for example here. See also Family Line, Berks Vol 4, pg 50. The original is available at ancestry.com (incorrectly listed as Adams County because they microfilmed those records at the same time). typed at ancestry and originals. The indexing of the originals is awful so you'll need to use the typed version from archive.org to find anything in it.)
